Dillon Marsh – Landmarks I
Landmarks I is the second solo exhibition by Dillon Marsh, which features the landscape photographic series Limbo and Cross Country.
“I tend to focus on things that are out of the ordinary, picking them out of the landscape where they might otherwise blend in. In each case I have chosen objects that can be found in multitude within their environment, so that I can depict a family of objects in a series of photographs. By displaying each project as such, I feel I am able to show both the character of the individual members, and the characteristics that make these objects a family.

“During the course of 2011 collected defunct city signage, stripped it of its advertorial origins, and hand-painted text thereon. These new, repurposed signs were then disseminated in public space throughout the greater Cape Town area. These works reference our country’s existing traditions of low-tech advertising and develop these practices through ambiguous language and the site-specificity of their placement. A telephone number was included on each sign allowing for an incidental audience to respond to the text, creating a relational and interactive element to the artwork.
The work is exhibited as a series of individual signs and prints, with telephonic responses transcribed as text and ambient sound installation.” -Conn Bertish
